BVI 2020 Day 04 Leverick Bay & Michael Beans

We were awokened by the sound of the getset at 07:30.

My one major complaints about this Leopard 48 is the fact that it doesn't come with an inverter.
Nor did it have a coffee maker (perculator or french press) that you could put on the gas stove.
You had to start the generator to have AC power to use the coffee maker.
The genset is right beside our bed in our cabin (port hull forward).
The genset exhaust exists beside Hans & Debbie cabin (port aft hull).
Not super loud, but noticable.

I made couple of large omlettes for everyone for breakfast.

Great shot of Jude on the princess seat before we left (08:04)

We dropped the ball around 09:30, and sailed around north east side of Tortola (Trellis Bay).
Still lots of wind 15-20 knots, so double reefed main and full jib.

We furled in the jib and started the motors for the passages through Tom Baggard Bay, Low Bay, and West End Bay.  Walter/Colleen have never gone though here before.  We had the charts out, and Navionics running on the tablet to check the depths.  Plus there was a mooring field for Scrub Island Marina (lots of boats).

Once we got though the channels, off with the motors and out with the jib.

We had the boat sailing along really well.
15-20 knots of breeze close hauled at a wind angle of 40 degrees.
With the double reef in the main, we never rounded up in the puffs.

Just look at the tack angles above: 145 degrees; catamaran are terrible upwind!

On the final tack above, we realized that we wouldn't make it into the channel into North South, so we motor sailed in with just the main.  The yellow circle is where we started the engines.

Trip Odometer: 14.80 miles
Moving Average: 6.7 knots
Max Speed: 12.0 knots
Moving Time: 02:12:00

There weren't too many balls left in Leverick Bay, so glad we put the motors on.

From the track above, it appears that you can sail between the Mosquito Island and Leverick Bay (through Cow Bay), but does get shallow there.  In the chart briefing, Conch said this was a NO GO zone.  We did see several cats go through the channel though.

We took one of the last balls and it started to rain.
In the words of sailing friend Kim Giroux:

Great --- Another FUCKING rainbow
We went ashore with garbage, got some ice, groceries, wine, and toured the gift shops.
Some pretty nice boats on the docks there.

When we got back to the boat, a monohull had anchored to windward of us, and was swinging fairly close to us.  If the wind shifted at all, we would have been touching.  Walter and I went over in the dingy to talk to them, and they hoisted anchor and went somewhere else.

We made a reservation for a table for:

Michael Beans Pirate Show

We have done it everytime we have been to the BVIs.
Always entertaining.
We had brought pirate costumes in our luggage for everyone

Twas a great time!
YAAAARRRRRRRR

We got back to the boat to cook some steak on the BBQ.
We had a hell of time getting the charcoal briquettes to stay lit.

Sure was hot that night sleeping as we couldn't keep the hatches open because it was raining off and on.

  1. Thanks Bart for sending us this. We well remember the conch blowing contest when we were in Leverick Bay to see Michael Beane. Lots and lots of fun. We are looking forward to this coming sailing season! Stay safe everyone! RV and SL
