CS34 2021 Cruise East Day 01 Whitby to Cobourg

We ended up NOT sleeping on the boat, but got down to the club by 7:30am.

We moved the boats over to the pumpout dock to make it easier to load the food and clothes:

There was another Whitby boat that was supposed to be leaving for Cobourg too.  Chris and Glenna said they won't be coming because they are having problems with their starter.

Walter and I went over to their boat, a Catalina 400 called Mast Hysteria.
They have been having troubles with their starter since they got the boat two years ago.
They had replaced starter battery, rebuilt starter, new starter, solenoid, and ignition switch.
Had a couple of marine mechanics looks at it, and still have the problem.
Not even a click.

Walter shorted the solenoid posts with a screw driver, and she started right up.
This showed that there is a problem the low amperage wire from the solenoid to the key and back.
We talked Chris through MacGyvering a temporary momentary press switch on the solenoid to simulate the ignition switch.

He later sent us a photo:

Works every time!

After getting loaded up and pumped out, we shoved off at 9:40am.

Whitby Pier and Lighthouse

Winds were every light for the first while, so we motored.
They then filled in on the other side of Oshawa:
8 knots from the SW, so out came the sails and off with the motors:

Sailed to just past Newcastle...

...and motored the rest of the way into Cobourg Harbour:

Still Time got assigned a slip on the north wall of the harbour:

Only slip available.

Doing my checks below, I noticed that the bilge was FULL of water, almost to the floorboards.
Using a battery shop vac, I sucked about 20 gallons from the bilge.  The bilge pump is new this year.  I giggled the power connection to it, and discovered I had a bad crimp.  Problem averted!

We went for a drink on Walter and Colleen's boat and met up with some old Newcastle/Whitby friends Harvey and Sherry-Lynn.  RV lent me some crimps and crimping tool from his boat.

We had a WONDERFUL dinner at the Italian restaurant adjacent the harbour.

Got a nice outside table overlooking the harbour.

Highly recommended.

Afterwards, we went over for a drink on Harvey and Sherry-Lynn's Hunter 38, and were met with other Newcastle/Whitby friends Yvan and Kim.

Was a great night!
