C22 Whitby Race Night

Very warm and humid, winds were forecast for 5 knots from the SE.

Melissa and John rigged the foresail, light #1, and racing main.

Storm clouds were forming in the south, was concerned about a gust front coming through, so I instructed John and Melissa what to do.  The storm dissipated, so no worries.

Course was set at 6 short. At the start, winds were closer to 10 knots.  We ran the line on starboard tack, and hardened up right at the gun.  What a great start in clear air.  We were the first to the windward mark, first to the 2nd mark, and shut the door on Cheekey Monkey causing them to tack away from behind us.

We thought we could take the gun for line honours, but the winds were dying at the finish.  We had to throw in a bunch of tacks near the finish to avoid starboard tack boats, and finished fourth of six boats within a minute of the leader (Elaine on the Viking 28).  We won in corrected time.

Melissa took the helm for the sail back and winds picked back up for a brisk 5 knot sail back to the harbor.
