The last time we had the race boat ZAMBONI out was for the Susan Hood over a month ago!
- I was in 1000 Islands
- Michael was in France.
- Kris was in New York
- Ash was in Muskoka/NOTL
- Phil was cottaging
The partners have committed to sail her as much as we can in September.
When we got to the boat, we could smell something absolutely awful.
We opened the cooler to discover that we had left some hard boiled eggs from the Susan Hood in a cooler, and they were RIPE! Into the garbage they went!
Today Wed is the first practice race of the fall series at National Yacht Club.
We had everyone but Phil out.
Winds were forecast for 15-22 knots from the west.
We went out with a reef in the main and the #3.
Once out past Ontario Place, we experienced 25+ knots of breeze, so we brought the #4 on deck and shoved the #3 down the front hatch. While getting the #4 hooked up, we had a gust throw the head into the water under the boat. Luckily the tack/clew/halyard were attached. Ash and I struggled to get the sail out of the water and hoisted. We both were soaked in the waves! However, the water was warm.
With the reef and #4, the boat powered up nicely.
We went to check in with the committee boat, and they were flying the Yankee Flag, meaning everyone MUST wear life jackets. Ash and I had ours on, but noboby else had brought them, so we withdrew and went for a sail.
The boat sailed really nicely, regularly doing 8+ knots on a close reach.
Close hauled we were doing close to 7 knots.
No chutes for us as were we shorthanded.
We turned around when we saw some troubling clouds on land:
