C22 Whitby Race Night

Daughter Melissa and I doublehanded with 7-10 knots winds from the SW.
Winds were actually 5-8 knots from the west.
Full racing main and #1; course was set to 3 Medium.

Trying to get Melissa some tiller time, however, she is not ready to deal the traffic at the start and upwind work, so I got her on the tiller for the downwind and reaching legs.

Good start on starboard tack with boats all around us.

5 Paddles and a tiller

We overshot the windward mark because we could see the wind getting softer near the mark.  We passed a couple of boats that tacked near the mark.  LOTS of traffic at this mark.

On the downwind and reaching legs, Melissa did well on the tiller.
We purposely went more downwind so we could reach up to the leeward mark before going upwind.

Many of the larger boats were going a lot faster than us because the wind was above Still Time's 25ft mast.

On this upwind leg, winds were dying, and we go knocked maybe 45 degrees.  We tacked and winds quickly swung from W to NW and we were able to make the next mark.  Learned this from Tom on ACE on the weekend: you never want to be the outside boat on a knock; it is preferable to be the inside boat.

On the last upwind leg to the finish line, we stayed on port tack to make the distance to get to the finish line.
This tuned out well because the wind was dying towards the finish.

Fourth across the line of eight boats in our division.
SECOND in corrected time behind Cheeky Monkey.

Great night on the water!
