Little Still Time Masting and Shakedown Sail

Next Wednesday is the first race at Whitby Yacht Club.

Had the crew of Still Time down to get her ready.

I had already spent some time yesterday running the halyards in the mast, attaching the new wind instrument to the masthead, and running the cable down the mast.

John brought the boat over the basin where we were working on the mast.

Melissa and Chris came out and we enjoyed the Wednesday traditional pizza and Maclays.

We attached the spreaders, upper and lower shrouds, and cleaned up the lines.
Tested the deck and steaming lights.
Also attached the new spinnaker halyard.

We attached the upper shrouds to the chainplates, and hoisted the mast up:

We attached
  • lower shrouds
  • shroud tubes
  • forestay
  • adjustable backstay
  • traveler lines
  • mainsheet
  • boom
  • boom vang

We put the mainsail and #2 jib on:

I hooked up the wind instrument and it worked perfectly.

We headed out into Lake Ontario for a shake down sail:

Melissa on the Tiller

Whitby lighthouse

We went a couple of miles in the lake.  Winds were light between 4 and 6 knots form the east.  We got the boat going at close to the speed of the wind.

I did NOT have my GPS with me so no track or stats.

The boat performed perfectly.

Coming in the harbour

Still need to:
  • give her a good cleaning inside and out
  • mount wind display on a board for the companionway
  • find new mast bolt (using a screwdriver for now!)
  • tension the rig
  • install bilge pump
  • install Cunningham
  • get rest of sails from home
  • get cushions from home
