Tanzer 26 Delivery

I guy I work with bought a Tanzer 26 off Kijiji.

Scott has never sailed, but wanted a change in life, this boat was his ticket.

The previous owner John delivered the boat from 50 Point in Hamilton to National Yacht Club in Toronto.

We drove down after work; Scott will pickup his car tomorrow after taking the GO Train in to a meeting downtown.

The boat is a 1979 Tanzer 26 called Luff Affair.  It is very unusual in that it has wheel steering and a inboard diesel engine.  Meeting John and Bill at the dock, it was apparent that this boat has been well taken care of. Her hull is very shiney, the deck/cockpit clean, and down below was spotless.  Brand new furler and genoa sail.  The decks are solid, with no soft spots.  Even has an asymmetrical spinnaker.

John spent some time explaining the various systems on the boat; very interesting guy.

He was concerned about a fresh water leak coming from the rear of the boat and pooling near the motor under the cockpit floor.  Coming from Hamilton, they had to bail it out with a margarine container and rags every 15 minutes.  I took a look.  Nothing was leaking when the boat is at the dock and the motor is off. We started the motor and there was a trickle of fresh water coming from the rear of the boat.  We could NOT find the source of the leak.  We thought it was the exhaust hose, but could not find where.

We decided to head out anyways and monitor it.  We checked it every 15/30 minutes and found it lessened the longer we were out.

Boat has the most unique re-boarding ladder
We toured the various Yacht Clubs in Toronto Harbour.
  • Island Yacht Club
  • Royal Canadian Yacht Club
  • Queen's City Yacht Club
We went out the eastern gap and past the Leslie Street spit.  Wind was on nose and only about 1-2 knots of breeze.  We tried to sail with just the genoa, but nothing.  The new sail is perfect, the new furler worked great!

The wheel steering is VERY wonky!  There is about 3/4 turn of play in the wheel and the rudder wanders all over the place.  It is like driving an old Chevy! This will need to be addressed ASAP.  Because of the amount of play in the wheel, the working autohelm was useless.

The one cylinder diesel putted us along smoothly at 5.6 knots the entire way.  It was a calm night with little waves.  No moon, so a little dark. It was however very cold (glad I brought some foul weather gear for both of us!)

We got in close to midnight and docked beside the Still Times:

Easy delivery really.
