C22 Cleaning up Little Still Time

The time has come to freshen up the Catalina 22 and put her on the market.
She has not been sailed since before the Covid outbreak.
Even the year before that, the racing fleet was only two boats in the class.

Poor girl needs some love

It is hard to sell a boat with yucky brightwork:

...and a cracked fiberglass companionway hatch:

This crack was digging into the teak rails that hold it on.

First step was to fiberglass the crack and add some structure to the weakened flanges:

Followed by several coats of white gelcoat to cover the fiberglass cloth (and lots of sanding).

One coat of Interlux PreKote primer paint, followed by a couple coats of Interlux Brightside paint:

The paint was rolled on, and tipped with a brush to remove the bubbles.

Really freshened up the worn out gelcoat of this pop top hatch.

I had some material left over from a house project, and decided to duplicate the teak in plastic wood:

Sanded down all the teak that I was going to re-use and put on 3 coats of Cetol marine varnish:

Think it turned out well!

Brought it down to the boat:

Before

Before putting in on, I removed EVERYTHING from the boat and power washed the insides/outsides.

After

NOT going to put the teak grabrails back on.
They are cracked and look really rough.
Going to source some stainless ones.
Will have to fill the extra holes with epoxy.

Before heading out some ominous clouds came in from the NW:

Still LOTS to do before she goes on the market:

  • replace grab rails and fill holes
  • paint front hatch
  • paint cockpit lockers
  • attach companionway thresh hold
  • attach companionway styles
  • mount companionway boards
  • install battery
  • install bilge pump
  • hookup VHF radio
  • fabricate cover for bilge
  • refinish interior teak trim
  • clean up some wiring and plumbing
  • replace saloon table
  • wash all the lines at home
  • raise mast and tune rig
  • bring interior cushions
  • bring sails

There's Still Time!

I ordered some 24" stainless grab rails from Port Whitby Marine Supplies.
$26 each, should be here by the weekend.
Will have to drill a couple of new holes and fill some others.
