CS34 WYC to Cobourg

We got up fairly early and spent some time cleaning the insides and outside of Still Time.

At 9:30am, went over for a pumpout.
9:45 left WYC.
Engine Hour meter showed 588.2 hours

Ventured out of the harbour with:
  • Aftica
  • French Vanilla
  • Sea Beyond
We passed Kelona from WYC.  They were heading from Cobourg back to WYC.

We did not do much sailing as any bit of wind was on the nose.

6.22 knots of speed
96 ft of water

3100 RPMs on the Yanmar diesel
The redline is 3400

Trip Odometer: 40.0 miles (Estimated)
Moving Average: 5.8
Moving Time: 05:51:20

NOTE: The handheld GPS that I use to do the GPS tracks was messing up, so the track is incomplete.

We got to Cobourg, and I decided that we would try the west wall for free reciprocol.

Also joining us from Newcastle:
  • Cajun
  • Marietta
  • Silhouette
  • Whisper
  • Edisto Blue
  • Casita
All of us went to the King George for dinner.  We were the last to leave for the restaurant; GOOD THING!  A thunderstorm rolled through bringing extreme winds from the SW; I'm guestimating 40+ knots.  We borrowed a couple of extra fenders from Brian on Edisto Blue and John on Casita.

We looked out in the bay, and a large 36 ft powerboat was dragging anchor right towards us!  It ended up ploughing into the Catalina 320 in front of us from FPYC:

Turns out the owner of the boat were Ronny and Heather from Newcastle!  Ronny was the previous owner of Santeria.  Small world!  Before they could get their motors started and have any control of the boat, they had scratched the boat in front of us, broke a stantion, and totalled their rail BBQ.  To top if off their anchor was wrapped in weeds, and they couldn't get up on the deck.

A smaller power boat also started dragging its anchor towards us, so we had about 10 of us to fend him off.  However, the owner had got his motor started and anchor up before he hit us or the shore.

After dinner, we were tired and settled down for be night.

At around 3am, another thundertorm roared through, waking us up with heavy rain, winds, and waves.  I moved the borrowed fender to she shore wall, and the waves were causing Still Time to ride up and down over a foot with each wave.  The strong winds were from the south and were pushing us against the wall.  Didn't sleep that night, as I was worried about damage to the boat, and other boats in the bay dragging anchor.

Edisto Blue (Alberg 30) and Casita (Sabre 28) did not fair as well, as they do not have as much freeboard, and their hulls were going under the metal sea wall and doing damage.  They ended up moving to a slip in the early morning.  We did the same, as the winds were picking up again in the early morning.

We went to the ButterMilk Cafe
  • Rita and I
  • Harvey and Sherry Lynn
  • Yvan and Kim
  • Don and Judy
Went back to the boat for a snooze.

We had a 2pm planning session with everyone at another pub downtown (Cat and Fiddle).

Our destination for tomorrow was Sandy Cove and leave at 9am.
