Great White Shark

Did another lesson with Ian and Andrew last night on the sailing school Shark Great White.

Before the lesson, I vacuumed out the rear lazerette and got a gallon of water out of it.  Also rigged a proper reefing line.  The battery was dead on the boat, so we didn't have any instruments.

At the dock we:
  • reviewed parts of the sails
  • reviewed sail controls
  • sources of wind and weather info
  • navigation lights
  • navigation buoys
  • knots

  • howto hoist the jib
  • howto hoist the main
  • howto reef the main
  • howto shake the reef out
  • howto flake the main

  • safety equipment
  • departure check list
  • using the motor
  • leaving the dock

We hoisted the main going into the harbour and then the jib after clearing the channel, and were sailing with a reefed main between 4 and 5 knots.

We reviewed points of sail, tacking, gybing, heaving to, and then progressed to do several crew overboard drills.  Andrew and Ian are quick learners, and it was good to review all these things from the previous lessons.

The winds did lighten so we hove to and shook the reef out.

I wanted to get in the channel before dark because we didn't have any navigation lights, so we headed in at 8:30pm and got to the dock around 9pm to put the boat away while there was still light.

Thanks guys, that was fun!
