MUMM36 ZAMBONI Round Island Race

The round the island race is put on by National Yacht Club and is a circumnavigation of the Toronto Islands.

I picked up Jenny and Walter and headed down the DVP (Don Valley Parking Lot).
Google maps navigation was telling us about an accident just before that Bay Bloor bridge blocking 2 of the 3 lanes and a backup of 31 minutes.

Too bad people can't read signs:

We ended up getting into NYC around 11:45 for the 12:30 first gun.
No problem as the start was by Ontario Place.

We had 9 people on board:
  • Kris (helm)
  • Mike (float)
  • Me (bow)
  • Ash (pit)
  • Phil (main)
  • Jenny (runners and spin trim)
  • Walter (jib)
  • John (jib)
  • Mike (John's brother)
Gorgeous warm sunny day with 12-15 knots of breeze from the SSW.
We went to the start line with a full main and heavy #1 headsail.

We were the 4th start, so we used the time to practice LOTS of tacks and gybes to get the crew in sync.
We were a little over powered, but moved the jib cars back to flatten the bottom of the headsail and spill wind out the top.  Plus we had lots on rail meat to keep the boat on its feet.

First time Jenny has been on the boat in 2 years!

We had a great start, and were near the front of the pack just behind the MUMM30 Notorious.
Winds were too forward to hoist a chute until after we went around the Gibraltar mark on the SW corner of Toronto Islands.  We carried our largest fractional chute gybing around T2 to the T7 where we had to douse to go upwind to the finish by the Island Airport.

We finished 2nd about 30 seconds behind Notorious.

It was great to have 9 people on board.
Made maneuvers easier, and having Mike floating doing tactics made us faster too.

A good time was had by all with a couple of dockside cockpit beers and some Pingle Farms honey crisp apples from Walter.

Great day on the water!
