Forecast was for 11-15 knots from the SW.
Hoisted the main inside the breakwater and set a reef in the main.
Thanks Kingston!
Lots of heal in the puffs, but the right sail combination.
We were sailing with this Freedom 36 with double unstayed masts who was motoring sailing with their forward main.
We sailed past Collins Bay, and made the turn to the North Channel and Adolphus Reach. Now we had to go directly into the shifting winds. I furled in the head sail and motor sailed with the reefed main, keeping the mainsail driving.
The Beckoning motored sans sails, so they pulled a couple of miles ahead of us.
The original plan was to anchor around the corner in Hay Bay.
However, the anchorages there would be exposed with the SW 15+ knots winds.
So we turned left and went into Picton Harbour.
We called into Prince Edward Yacht Club PEYC. They were full, but did have some mooring balls for $15 a night, but the max swing size is for a 36ft boat.
We anchored Still Time in 8ft of water on the east side of the harbour:
Pretty weedy, but great spot to pee the dog. We have anchored here a couple of times over the years.
Walter and Collen tried several times to anchor, and just could not get their anchor to set, were too close to other boats on mooring balls there, or were drifting into the buoyed channel. They ended up going around the corner and anchoring in a bay before the cement plant:
Yellow star is where they anchored |
We did a couple of tours around Picton Harbour in the dingy:
Lights of PEYC later that night:
