MacIntosh Newport Day 02

Our day started at 7am with breakfast at the hotel.

We had to make a trip to WestMarine to get some things for the boat

  • bilge cleaner
  • oil absorbent pads
  • pelican hook for gate
  • tube of 4200 sealant
Right beside the hotel:

We UBERed to the boat just before 10am.

We got to work on the boat.

Some nice boats on the docks!

J/133

Swan 46

Sabre 456

Swan 601

First task was to unload the cockpit sail locker

  • storm tri sail
  • storm jib
  • code 0
  • asym
  • light air drifter
  • 0.75oz spinnaker (new)
  • 1.5oz spinnaker

We unpacked, ran the luffs and re-packed each sail at the dock.

This new never used spinnaker is like 1400 sqft of sail:

...before packing them back into the locker.

Carl was working on mounting the life raft.
Through bolting it and sealing it with 4200

Had to remove the boom vang to do this.

Durk was working on cleaning out the bilge and try to solve an oil leak problem he had on the delivery.  In the 700+ mile delivery with lots of motoring, about a quart of oil had leaked into the bilge.  He had to remove a motor mount and lift the motor up slightly with the main halyard to get to the leak.

Next we sent Luca up the mast:

Luca had to remove the masthead trilight and fix a flakey connection.
Very important for an offshore race, and it also illuminates the windex at night.
Luca also brought down a skied topping lift.

View from top of mast:

Next we all brought out and repacked all the foresails from the bow:

  • #4
  • #3 (new)
  • light #1
  • heavy #1 (new)

We saw a 3 masted schooner come in:

Back at the dock, a power boat panicked in the 25+ knots winds, and rammed a boat on the other side of the dock:

OUCH

Luca and I went to the skippers meeting at a theatre downtown:

Notice that everyone was wearing masks:

The presentation on weather and crossing the gulf stream was especially useful:

It confirmed our Predictwind weather routing models we were running.
In the above photo, you can see the rumline.
The Gulf Stream has a "meander" along the rumline.  We plotted out a couple of waypoints to avoid have any strong currents against us.

Meanwhile Durk was still trying to solve the oil leak problem.

We made a reservation for a crew dinner at a place on the water:

We got our first crew photo:

The wharfs in Newport are beautiful!

Lots of interesting shops and restaurants.

Saw this boat that had its spreaders swept forward:

Just weird!

Tomorrow is race day!
